A new year for civil rights and political empowerment
Happy New Year from CAIR-Houston! Our work is cut out for us this year, and we will strive more than ever to serve our mission. We invite you to join us in one (or more) of four ways:
Let's start the new year by going straight to the Texas Capitol!
Texas Muslim Capitol Day
Has there ever been a better time to visit the State Capitol and meet with our elected officials to share our concerns with them?
The eighth Texas Muslim Capitol Day will be on Tuesday, January 31, 2017. It will run from approximately 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., plus travel time.
Capitol Day is an opportunity for community members of all ages and faiths across the state to visit the Texas State Capitol in Austin, meet with their elected officials and learn about the political process and civic advocacy.
CAIR-Houston will provide transportation to Austin and lunch is included. General tickets are $35 and student tickets are $20. Scholarships are available based on need. Register here. For more information or questions, please email us at [email protected] or [email protected]. If you would like to make a donation to support one or more scholarships of $35 (for a general ticket) or $20 (for a student ticket), please go to this link and select "Scholarship Support." Alternatively, you can mail a check payable to CAIR-Houston to us at 5445 Almeda Road, suite 301, Houston, TX 77004.
Help Free the Five Humanitarians of the Holy Land Foundation
The new administration will be sworn in on January 20, so there is a small window of time to right an immense wrong. The 15- to 65-year sentences received by the five defendants in the Holy Land Foundation trial can be commuted by the President.
Please call President Obama at the White House at 202-456-1111 and tell the person who answers the phone that you have a message for the President, then say, "Dear President Obama, please commute the sentences of the five Holy Land Foundation defendants to time served. Thank you".
Read more about the case here.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade
CAIR-Houston brings together a group to march in the Martin Luther King Jr. parade every year. Please join us! Sign up to join the parade proudly carrying a banner on behalf of Houston-area Muslims.
Executive Director's Message
In light of the angst the community has experienced regarding the new presidential administration, please be reminded of what Allah (swt) says in the Qur'an:
2:155 And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient,
2:156 Who, when disaster strikes them, say, "Indeed we belong to Allah and indeed to Him we will return."
2:157 Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided.
