The Revival of Trumpcare
After its disastrous first roll-out six weeks ago, President Trump's resurrected health care bill, the America Health Care Act, dubbed Trumpcare, narrowly passed in the House by a  217 to 213 vote. The bill's passage puts Republicans one step closer to fulfilling their seven-year promise to repeal and replace President Obama's universal healthcare measure, the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The new bill profoundly changes the ACA by eliminating mandatory tax penalties for people who do not have health insurance, rolling back state Medicaid expansion that covers millions of low income individuals and potentially allowing insurance companies to charge higher premiums to pregnant women, the elderly and those with preexisting conditions. Trumpcare is estimated to leave 24 million Americans uninsured. Its cost is unknown as the House GOP voted on the bill without waiting for cost estimates from the Congressional Budget Office.

Trumpcare's passage in the House is President Trump's first legislative "win" since taking office. Shortly after the vote, he took to the Rose Garden to celebrate. However, despite President Trump's victory lap, Trumpcare has an uphill battle ahead in its journey to become law. The bill must pass the Senate next but is deeply unpopular among the public, while Obamacare has gained in approval. Some Senate Republicans have already vowed to reject the bill and work on a new version of it. Democrats claim that a vote for Trumpcare amounts to political suicide for Republicans who will be ousted by their constituents  in 2018 for voting for a bill that costs more and insures fewer people. After the vote, House Democrats taunted Republicans on the legislative floor by singing, "na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye!"

Sally Yates Set To Testify Next Week
Former acting Attorney General Sally Yates testified at a Senate hearing on May 8 that she warned the White House about former national security adviser Michael Flynn's contacts with Russia three weeks before Flynn was fired. Yates, a holdover from the Obama administration, fired by President Trump in January for her refusal to enforce Trump's travel ban, testified that she expressed concern to the White House in a private meeting on January 26 that Flynn lied about discussing sanctions with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. Yates believed Flynn's dishonesty made him vulnerable to being compromised by Russia. Yates also revealed in her testimony that President Barack Obama had warned President Trump not to hire Flynn. Flynn was not immediately fired after Yates's warning. He was fired eighteen days later following public reports that Yates warned the White House about Flynn. The White House refutes Yates's claims, instead stating that Yates simply gave it a "heads up" about Flynn's contacts with Russia.

The contents of Yates's testimony was not a bombshell as it was limited for confidentiality reasons and what she did reveal had largely already been reported. Nonetheless, Yates's testimony adds fuel to the Russian investigation fire that the White House wishes would disappear. In one of a series of four tweets President Trump sent in response to Yates's testimony, the President wrote: "The Russia-Trump collusion story is a total hoax, when will this taxpayer funded charade end

Hillary Clinton Returns to Politics
Six months after her historic election loss to President Trump, Hilary Clinton is back in the public sphere. On Tuesday, Clinton appeared at a women's conference in New York City and frankly opened up about the election and her future political aspirations. Clinton stated that she took personal responsibility for her loss, but also blamed Russian WikiLeaks and FBI Director James Comey's investigation into her emails. Clinton stated that she was on her way to winning but for those two intervening forces. Clinton made a point to mention that she received three million more popular votes than President Trump.

Clinton detailed that her political future is one of "an activist citizen" and "part of the resistance" of President Trump's administration. Clinton has been working to organize a new political group, Onward Together,  that will fund resistance efforts for President Trump's agenda. Clinton is expected to launch the group as early as next week. Clinton's aides say that she will not run for president again.
