In 2015, the UN General Assembly adopted a universal agenda for sustainable development, calling on all nations to mobilize global efforts around a common set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs. TEEBAgriFood delivers the impetus for change in food systems by 'valuing the invisible' in the SDGs. We suggest scaling-up solutions for the SDGs through a three-tiered lens of agriculture & food systems - the "SDG food cake".

Governments, non-governmental organisations and businesses are looking for ways to enjoy all that nature has to offer without depleting the earth's riches. The Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) collaborated in seven projects, to explore the possible role of natural capital, and also analysed this role for a number of past projects. [Download the report]

The report describes how biodiversity is central to the natural capital framework and yet its values are often overlooked in natural capital assessments. It sets out positive ways that businesses and others can better reflect biodiversity concerns into decisions and sets out next steps for future work.

From the Blogosphere
Putting an economic value on our natural environmental is difficult, both from an ethical and from a technical perspective. Nature is therefore often regarded as 'priceless'. However, in our globalized economic system, the value of nature's multitude of critical services is subsequently translated as "0".

by Peter Bakker, WBCSD

It's hard to believe it's already been one year since the global adoption of the SDGs. The past year has been about enhancing understanding and appreciation of the development agenda the SDGs represent, and gradually accepting that within this new global framework, all countries are in need of further development.
