With wins in Virginia and Alabama, the wind is at our back for a change. But we need to act quickly. Campaigns are revving up now and we have a huge job ahead of us in 2018.
From State to Federal elections, any of us who know good candidates should let our friends know about them. And that's why I'm writing you about Betsy Sweet, running for Governor of Maine.
Betsy is a progressive running as a Clean Elections, publicly financed candidate.
Step one in a new progressive politics is running without
being dependent on corporations, special interest PACs and wealthy donors. Betsy is the only serious Democratic candidate in the Maine primary running clean, doing so that as Governor she can act decisively on health care, drug addiction, gun safety, economic development, and family support.

Betsy is a long-time community organizer, women's and civil rights activist, mom and entrepreneur with two businesses. She has worked hard to increase access to healthcare, strengthen Maine's economy, improve education, reduce student debt, protect Maine's environment, enact sensible gun laws, and improve the lives of women, people with disabilities, survivors of abuse, and victims of discrimination. She wrote the first Family Medical Leave Act in the country and her work on money in politics led to Maine's Clean Election law, the first in the nation, in 1996.

According to the Cook Political Report, the upcoming races for Governor may be more important for Democrats than the congressional midterm elections, especially when you consider the redistricting that will happen under the next Governor's watch. Across the country, 37 Governorships are up for grabs. 27 of them are currently held by Republicans. Of those 27 races, the report has analyzed five to be "toss-ups." Maine is one of those five states. The threats posed by the Trump administration in Washington require opposition on many levels - and the role of opposition Governors has become dramatically more important. That is why this race for Governor in Maine matters to you - no matter where you live. And, it is why I am asking you to support Betsy Sweet for Governor.

The way Maine's Clean Elections work is that Betsy has to raise $200,000 in "seed money" contributions from individuals of $100 or less in order to be eligible for public financing.
